Seminar Short DescFractions are more than an elementary math topic they are a foundational concept that shapes mathematical success across grade levels. In this session, teachers will explore how fraction understanding develops across the NYS Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, from early partitioning experiences to advanced applications in middle and high school.
Seminar Full DescFractions are one of the most foundational and challenging concepts in mathematics. From early experiences partitioning shapes and sharing equally, to operations with rational expressions and functions in secondary mathematics, fraction understanding serves as a critical bridge to proportional reasoning, algebraic thinking, and higher-level mathematical success.

In this professional learning session, educators will examine how fraction concepts are intentionally developed across the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, tracing the progression from early elementary fraction foundations through middle school operations with rational numbers and into high school applications. NYSED s standards emphasize conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application, requiring students to build fraction knowledge over time through connected learning experiences.
