Seminar Objectives | -Deepen her understanding of OverDrive's Sora app and how it differs from OverDrive's classic app.
-Begin the set up process in OverDrive Marketplace and Library Card Manager. -Review how to update patrons in OverDrive. -Assess layout of library space. |
Work Summary | -Technology assistant Joe Marchino confirmed that Friendship does not use SSO, nor has plans to. Once Sally is an authorized user within Marketplace, Joe will push Sora onto student devices.
-I reviewed accounts with Sally and explained the purpose and function of Library Card Manager. (In most districts, patron library cards are linked to the LMS where Sora users are updated automatically. In Friendship, this must be done manually.) -Sally and I reviewed the layout of the elementary library and the ms/hs students lack of access to resources. The elementary space is crowded with storage boxes, supplies, carts of professional development books, and offers limited seating for students. The space designated for ms/hs is located across the hall from the elementary library but is empty in case of another COVID outbreak. (Hence, the storage boxes and supplies on book shelves in the elementary library.) Last year, the school's nurse's office was housed in the area that will eventually be the ms/hs library. Currently, ms/hs resources are housed in two locations (elementary library and computer lab), and Young Adult fiction books are blocked by several carts in the elementary library. Non-fiction books are located in a separate room without dedicated staff and circulation desk. |
Assessment of Learning | -Sally provided feedback, asked questions, and took notes.
-Sally sat in on my meeting with Joe M., which allowed her to receive another explanation of how Sora should be accessed--i.e., on personal devices, not desktops. -Today's work also applies to Whitesville CSD where Sally is the librarian. |
Evaluation Summary Notes | -Sally provided feedback and with Sora on individual devices, will increase student usage and supports Friendship's student achievement goals for the 2022-2023 which is for students to develop a love of reading. I hope to see this expanded to grades 7-12 when library resources are neatly organized and a welcoming space has been put in place. |
Needed Changes | -The changes that need to be made (ms/hs library space) are beyond Sally's control.
-Although I was able to assist the librarian with weeding several years ago, there are many more non-fiction books (outdated and in poor condition), that should be removed from the collection. |
Next Steps | -Ensure that Sally is able to log into OverDrive Marketplace and Library Card Manager.
-Request Joe push out Sora onto all student devices. -Assist with helping Sally set up ms/hs library, if necessary, when the space becomes available. -Assist with weeding if necessary. -Supporting Sally in establishing a school library setting that reflects intellect and life-long learning as a priority. |
