Workshop Full Desc | This interactive workshop, "Women in Tech," equips educators with strategies and resources to integrate diverse female role models into computer science instruction. This workshop is designed for educators and aligned to the NYS Computer Science and Digital Fluency (CSDF) standard 4-6.IC.7, which states that students should be able to "Identify a diverse range of role models in computer science".
In the workshop, participants will explore the historical and contemporary contributions of women in computing, with a focus on ensuring representation across race, culture, and background. Some of the women that we will discuss include Ada Lovelace, who is often considered the first computer programmer, Grace Hopper, who was a pioneer of computer programming languages, and Kimberly Bryant, founder of Black Girls CODE . Through inquiry, media, and curriculum design, educators will examine how to meaningfully embed equity and representation into classroom practice to inspire all students. Participants will engage in: - An overview of the CSDF Standard 4-6.IC.7 and its place in the broader NYS Computer Science and Digital Fluency framework. - Case studies of influential women in tech, both past and present, through videos, articles, and other resources. - Engage in hands-on activities based on the influential women in technology. - Create lesson plans or activities that incorporate diverse role models into existing computer science or cross-curricular units. |
