Workshop Full DescThis workshop (4 sessions) uses Angie Thomas' novel The Hate U Give as a catalyst for significant, relevant, and difficult conversations. The four sessions will allow for text-based discussions as well as some of the most profound research and resources for teachers as they navigate contemporary social issues and injustices with their students. The content is designed to help teachers guide conversations with students about racism, racial identity, bias, and the way these forces shape aspects of society. The workshop will also include discussion questions about the protests, police brutality, and media literacy. There will be an explicit connection to NYS Mental Health Education, specifically in Section 2, Developing Healthy Relationships: 2B Empathy, Compassion, Acceptance.

Workshop PrerequisitesParticipants should read Angie Thomas' The Hate U Give before the workshop series.
It's important to share that this novel depicts authentic, contemporary social issues and injustices.
Workshop Objectives-Participants will engage in a novel study: Thomas' The Hate U Give, a catalyst for difficult conversations
-Participants will analyze contemporary social issues that parallel the novel study.
-Participants will discuss contemporary research and resources that will help inform students and navigate difficult conversations.
-Participants will connect the novel and the resources to the NYS Framework Mental Health Instruction (Section 2: Empathy, Compassion, and -Acceptance: 2B Ca., 2B Cb., and 2B Cc.)
-Participants will begin to develop an action plan for fall 2021
