Seminar Objectives-Meet with Sabrena Beaton to review K-12 library program, review collections
Work Summary-Todd Catalano from Erie 1 was present to help Sabrena with library automation software and troubleshoot errors that were a result of a glitch in the PowerSchool
-Sabrena took me on a tour of the high school library (sadly neglected with outdated resources, crowded shelving which results in books stacked on top of others, and a library aide who has outfitted the circulation desk with a small refrigerator and personal conveniences.) The ms/hs library is used for housing students during study hall. I recommend a major week and update to the collection, but only if Sabrena was going to be promoting its resources
-Sabrena inventoried the elem, library last year. I noticed that the biography section was divided into sections (athletes, inventors, presidents, etc) and asked why? (Because that's how it was set up when I got here). This is frustrating for a patron who is searching for a title in the OPAC - it only lists 92 (92 CAS, or (s WAS)as the location. This results in a student or teaching having to go to each biography section to find a book. I explained to Sabrena that if the books were grouped together, shelving biography books would be much more efficient as well as retrieving. She agreed and I re-organzed the section. I also pulled about 20 outdated biographies of athletes and celebrities that were from 2010-2013
Assessment of Learning-Sabrena has not taken any library courses and does not utilize the information Fluency Continuum. She is not tenured and is unsure if she will pursue a master's degree in library science. Sabrena needs to speak with administration about the goal and purpose of the school library and needs increased support form the hs library aide
-Sabrena signed up to participate in the December 6, CLC. I'm hoping that she will build relationships with other librarians and increase her confidence
