Seminar Short DescThe Reading Cafe provides middle and high-school ELA teachers an opportunity to discuss contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction. The first novel is Jeff Zentner's In the Wild Light (August 5, 2021): an unforgettable story of friendship, loss, and new beginnings: a poignant coming-of-age novel about two best friends whose connection is tested when they get the opportunity to leave their impoverished small town for an elite prep school.
Seminar Full DescThe Reading Cafe provides middle and high-school ELA teachers an opportunity to discuss contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction. The first novel is Jeff Zentner's In the Wild Light (August 5, 2021): an unforgettable story of friendship, loss, and new beginnings: a poignant coming-of-age novel about two best friends whose connection is tested when they get the opportunity to leave their impoverished small town for an elite prep school.
In the Wild Light has been named one of the best books of the year by The New York Times; Buzzfeed; Kirkus Reviews; Publishers Weekly; and Chicago Public Library.
*Important Note: The Reading Cafe book talks aren't designed to promote novels to teach to students; the talks are an opportunity for teachers to talk about contemporary adolescent literature that could be a great addition to curriculum/instruction; teaching the novel to students is a district-based decision.

Seminar ObjectivesTeachers will read Jeff Zentner's In the Wild Light.
Teachers will discuss the novel: author's purpose, theme, setting, characterization, powerful passages, parallels to contemporary life, etc.
Teachers will experience professional resources that connect to the novel.
Teachers will consider project-based learning connected to the novel.

Evaluation Summary Notes-The participants loved reading new adolescent literature, having time during the summer was a bonus. The loved Zentner's work: we communicated with him (the author) during our sessions.
Needed Changes-more time- they loved it & the time went by quickly
Next Steps-Bringing in contemporary adolescent literature can be tremendously beneficial for kids; it creates a powerful sense of community because everyone is "walking through" an experience together.
