The first novel is Jeff Zentner's In the Wild Light (August 5, 2021): an unforgettable story of friendship, loss, and new beginnings: a poignant coming-of-age novel about two best friends whose connection is tested when they get the opportunity to leave their impoverished small town for an elite prep school. |

In the Wild Light has been named one of the best books of the year by The New York Times; Buzzfeed; Kirkus Reviews; Publishers Weekly; and Chicago Public Library. *Important Note: The Reading Cafe book talks aren't designed to promote novels to teach to students; the talks are an opportunity for teachers to talk about contemporary adolescent literature that could be a great addition to curriculum/instruction; teaching the novel to students is a district-based decision. |

Seminar Objectives | Teachers will read Jeff Zentner's In the Wild Light.
Teachers will discuss the novel: author's purpose, theme, setting, characterization, powerful passages, parallels to contemporary life, etc. Teachers will experience professional resources that connect to the novel. Teachers will consider project-based learning connected to the novel. |
