The Reading Cafe provides middle and high-school ELA teachers an opportunity to discuss contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction. The second book is Dan Harris' memoir 10% Happier: the 2019 Revised Edition: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works--A True Story. Teachers have experienced a tremendous amount of stress over the last three years. Harris' book is part-science, part-memoir, and part self-help; he outlines specific ways that he learned to deal with stress and improve his life. Join me and teachers from around the region as we work through Harris' experience and discovery. The first 15 registered will receive a copy of the book.
Workshop Full DescThe Reading Cafe provides middle and high-school ELA teachers an opportunity to discuss contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction. The first novel is Jeff Zentner's In the Wild Light (August 5, 2021): an unforgettable story of friendship, loss, and new beginnings: a poignant coming-of-age novel about two best friends whose connection is tested when they get the opportunity to leave their impoverished small town for an elite prep school.
In the Wild Light has been named one of the best books of the year by The New York Times; Buzzfeed; Kirkus Reviews; Publishers Weekly; and Chicago Public Library.
*Important Note: The Reading Cafe book talks aren't designed to promote novels to teach to students; the talks are an opportunity for teachers to talk about contemporary adolescent literature that could be a great addition to curriculum/instruction; teaching the novel to students is a district-based decision.
