Seminar ObjectivesAs a result of today's visit, Mary will:
-Observe and participate in the weeding process of the elementary library's K-5 non-fiction.
Work SummaryAs I went through the non-fiction collection, I recommended books be pulled (weeded) from the collection based on the following criteria:
-Worn and in need of replacement
-Worn and outdated information
-Dated covers containing information that no longer supports curriculum standards
-Chemical odors common to old books that have not been opened in a long time. This odor is what contributes to the "smell" of libraries...
Assessment of Learning-Mary recently started a school library master's program. She mistakenly thought that all books with a copyright date over 5 years should be weeded from the collection. I explained how this criteria usually applies to content related to technology and sometimes biographies, but not pets, hobbies, and many other categories. As we went through evaluating books, Mary gained valuable insight into the many variables that are applied when weeding books.
-When choosing a book for discard, I would ask Mary for her opinion on why I had selected it. Some books appeared dated but the content was still relevant and we would discuss whether it should remain (where it could be marketed to students), be replaced (necessary to spend more money?), shared with teachers for instructional use, or weeded.
-Mary took notes and asked questions
-Together we determined that there should be no more purchases made for books on poetry, countries and states, and feelings/emotions.
-Together we determined that it would benefit students in the Belfast community to have access to high interest K-5 non-fiction books like tractors, bulldozers, heavy equipment, dinosaurs, and sports teams since this was low representation of these topics.
Evaluation Summary Notes-Today provided me the opportunity to model for Mary the decision-making process when determining whether to pull a book from the collection or allow it to remain. We conversed about condition and content of books. The non-fiction is relatively balanced and several recommendations were made regarding future purchases.
Needed Changes-Nothing
Next Steps-Mary will invite elementary teachers to the library for reviewing the large collection of math related books. These books, in brand new condition, take up an entire shelf and support classroom instruction but are unlikely to be checked out by students--unless they really love math and want to learn about equations, geometry, etc.
-Mary would like me to come back and assess the elementary library's biography section, and the high school library.
