Seminar Objectives-Continued with shelving books from special collections into the main collection
-Assessed future student use of floor space
-Transferred items from the elementary library's storage area to the high school library
Work Summary-Met with maintenance to discuss ways to improve student use of the library
-Goal is for the library to be seen as a welcoming environment and removal of a 3 1/2 x 20 foot book shelf would help open the space. The book shelf could be lowered to serve as a make space table for STEM. Also discussed moving the circulation desk, which has vinyl flooring beneath, to a carpeted area and using the vinyl floor area for STEM
-Discussed how books are labeled and agree that the catalog needs cleaned up. For example, some books are labeled as "Easy/596.7 Din" when the category only has the book labeled as "596.7 Din". There are multiple errors. We discussed the need to have the OPAC match what is on the spine. Not only will this help students find the book of their choice, but contributes to shelving the book back into the correct space
Assessment of Learning-Meaningful conversations and sharing during the work
-Was able to affirm participant's ideas and plans for the new school year
Evaluation Summary Notes-Participant is much more at ease with beginning the new school year. Has never worked with elementary school age students
-The organization of the collection is much better
Needed Changes-N/A
Next Steps-Participant will be following up with the head of maintenance to see if changes to the library entrance can be done before the start of school
-The library automation software needs to be accessed so that cataloging records can be updated. Have reached out to Todd Catalano at Erie 1 to help with this. Colored stickers covering shelf locations need to be removed from all Caldecott books (housed in the "Caldecott Area") and integrated into the main collection
