-Participants will understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive from month to month -Participants will experience the challenges low-income residents of Allegany and Cattaraugus counties have in maintaining housing, paying bills and taking care of their families, all while dealing with unexpected situations -Participants will step into the real-life situations of others as the simulation breaks down stereotypes -Participants will hear relevant data regarding poverty in our two counties and school districts from the facilitators, Far West Network of Teacher Centers |

-Participants also completed an evaluation at the end of the simulation in addition to a pre and post survey |

-Many participants commented on the simulation being an eye-opening experience and provided perspective for students who enter their classrooms daily -Good way for people to realize that sometimes people in poverty are doing all that they can do -Excellent insight on daily struggles that students endure -Excellent very moving and emotional debrief exercise Still need: -More conversation on what we can do during the debrief with colleagues -Identification of resources in each county that are available Action plan: -Put "the child first" -Create a safe environment for all students -Have a better understanding and more patience with parents and students -More empathy for what many of them are dealing with on a daily basis |
