Visible Learning for Mathematics: Surface Learning- October 6, 2022 (Olean Main Center-Conference Room C) Surface learning is the essential foundation that sets the stage for deeper learning. This workshop will focus on practical classroom strategies and routines for surface learning in mathematics. Participants will explore different approaches and participate in exercises most appropriate to surface learning. Visible Learning for Mathematics: Deep Learning- December 1, 2022 (Belmont Center Multi-purpose Room) In deep learning, students begin making generalizations and connections between mathematical ideas and can begin to plan, investigate, and elaborate on their learning. Participants will walk through different approaches and participate in exercises that promote deeper learning. Visible Learning for Mathematics: Transfer Learning & Making Mathematics Visible for All- March 2, 2023 (Sothern Tier West-STW Large Conference Room) This workshop explores the importance of transfer learning. Assessment of Learning | -Participants will actively engage in small group activities and conversations of best practice in mathematics instruction.
-Upon completion of the sessions participants will have an opportunity to reflect on and set goals for improving Tier 1 & 2 instruction. |
Evaluation Summary Notes | Participants liked the resources that were provided and including how to access the Learning Resources kits through Insignia. |
Needed Changes | Participants would like time to explore the resources further and to continue their learning around the Visible Learning text and focusing on developing "Success Criteria" for students. |
Next Steps | Explore and reserve STEM kits for their classrooms, prepare specific learning intentions based on the NGLS being taught, and review the NYSED updates including the platforms discussed (First in Math/Castle Learning). |
