Seminar Objectives-Observe Rosemarie G. two classes and provide feedback/recommendations for managing student behavior
Work Summary-Two classes were scheduled for the morning. For each class students came into the library quietly and knew where to sit. They were respectful while Rosemarie was taking attendance. They were attentive while she provided instruction. Students did not blurt out but raised their hand to ask a question
-At the end of the lesson, students were individually dismissed to select books from shelves as Rosemarie let them know how many books, if any, they could check out.
-There were multiple interruptions during Rosemarie's instructional time with students coming into the library to retrieve papers from the printer, and teachers using the back table. Some of the students needed help because their paper didn't print. Three students came in through the front door of the library to access the printer and Rosemarie needed to stop her instruction to address this.
-Three suggestions I made to Rosemarie: 1. Do not stand behind circulation desk but take laptop with scanner onto the floor and scan books while walking around. Teacher proximity will lessen misbehavior. 2. Change the routine so that after students get a book, they return to the seating area. Since an aide is not consistently available, they should not stand at the desk to check out a book. Rosemarie can check books out while circulating the floor. 3. Organize the circulation desk; stop taking donated books; and utilize me or a volunteer to process books for discard.
-Behavior issus arise when there is freedom of choice (selecting books) and an open space that allows for freedom of movement. Some studets may have trouble self-regulating their behavior and if Rosemarie is out on the floor and in close proximity to where students are browsing, incidences of student misconduct will be lessened.
